Kīlauea

Kīlauea is a volcano in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s very active currently.

Read the following words and phrases and their definitions.

• fire hose of lava - a long tube-like stream of lava
• collapse - a moment in which something suddenly breaks apart and falls down
• out of harm’s way - in a safe place, far enough from a dangerous place or situation
• cascade - flow down in large amounts like a huge waterfall

• a sight to behold - a wonderful or impressive thing to see
• grinding noises - the sound of things crushing or breaking
• heed signs - pay attention to signs
• first responders - people trained to come and help quickly in case of an emergency
